Freeze

2006

fruit, brass, glass

208×185×185cm

Installation view at Casa degli Artisti, Milan

Freeze (2006) was exhibited in a seductive location in Milan - built from basement bricks of old buildings bombed during the Second World War. Freeze was composed of a number of rectangular glass plates arranged vertically and radially to form a large cylindrical ray. The artist jammed fruits at various heights between the glass plates. The glass plates were misted by a vaporizer, which gave them the appearance of ice. The aesthetic impact was formidable, but what made the work extraordinary was the recurring transmutation of the fruit. The pieces of fruit dehydrated and shrank over time, and eventually fell from their positions between the glass plates. It was a splendid and incomparable metaphor for the relentless passing of time.
